It may not be new, but last month, Giuseppe Cutraro — the young pizza chef who joined the Big Mamma Group just a few years ago — gave us a fresh reason to visit this Italian hotspot when he won first prize for his contemporary Neapolitan pizza, at the 2019 Neapolitan Pizza World Championship, organised in Naples.

Yes, Ober Mamma — the 2015 opening from the team behind East Mamma, Pink Mamma, Mamma Primi, and all the rest — is now home to what has been named one of the best Neapolitan pies on the planet.

The winning slice is a lip-smacking combination of ultra-alveolée dough pimped with the sauce of yellow tomatoes, Tuscan ham (aged for 36 months), mozzarella di bufala, fresh figs, white almonds and provolone — all perfectly cooked to a crispy, cheesy climax over a wood fire.

Of course, there are lots of other scrumptious things on the menu at this laid-back trattoria and Oberkampf hang-out which proudly sources all of its products from the mother country — for example: the famous Big Mamma truffle pasta, piled with mascarpone, black truffles cream, more truffle, and mushrooms to boot, is a close second choice for those who want to splurge — but their award-winning pizza alone is worth the visit.

The warm atmosphere catered to by Italian-speaking waiters in this place is a welcome plus, nicely complemented by décor which is rustic-yet-modern mosaic mix of colourful blues and oranges, wood, brass and marble, with big windows which let the light stream in — even in winter — all of which gets our vote.

One thing to note though is that this place usually racks up a line — even on weekdays — so either get there around open time, or be willing to wait anywhere from 30-minutes to an hour for a table… luckily though, there are plenty of cool bars around where you can get a good glass of vino in the meantime :)

Perfect for: Pizza cravings, any day of the week — but especially when you need a pick-up post-work as the colder weather sets in.

What to order: The new house signature — scroll straight to the pizza section, you’ll see it. It’s 17€ and well-worth every penny.
