In honour of the ‘Day of the Dead’ or ‘Dia de Los Muertos’ on November 2, we give you La Mezcaleria — a Mexican-set speakeasy, hidden in the heart of the Marais, at the Hôtel 1K in Paris.

Dedicated to cocktails made from the elixir of the Gods from Oaxaca — known to us mere mortals as mezcal — this bar is a cool, sleek and sexy option to sip end-of-week drinks in style.

For those who don’t know or haven’t tried, mezcal is a deep, smoky alcohol made from a distillation of agave juice — and this place boasts one of the largest collections of it in the city, with over 100 types available at the bar; served up as shots for the specialists, or exquisitely mixed into one of its long list of creative concoctions for first timers.

Tucked behind the kitchens of INKA — the first Peruvian, contemporary restaurant in Paris — La Mezcaleria takes you on a trip to a Latin American oasis, and into a world where clandestine spirit, quirky décor and candle-lit lounges rule.

As you step into this sensual den filled with R&B beats (spun nightly by its resident DJ), you’ll be met with the sight of a huge illuminated cross on the ceiling, and surrounded by a lively blend of kick-knacks ranging from religious icons and colorful skulls, to plush cushions and a mosaic of Aztec motifs on the walls, with wood barrels by way of tables — all adding to the exotic experience.

In addition to the drinks — which blend the signature poison here with everything from chilli to lime, to pisco, waterlemon, mango, cognac, wine and even some whisky — they also serve a tasty selection of fresh tapas to snack on: ceviche, chicken & veggie tacos or a big bowl of guacamole, so you won’t have to starve as you socialise.

Perfect for: A funky night out on Halloween eve — or just great, Friday night cocktails to spice things up for the weekend, in an exotic, fun and sexy setting.

What to order: On Friday, go for the Muxhes — a bubbly cocktail with character, based on mezcal Bozal Cuixe, Mahina coco clement, red curry, Galliano, and Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum.
